The threat of forest conversion in one of the most preserved regions of the Amazon and a place of life for traditional populations and indigenous peoples is one of the main points mobilizing attention for the Purus-Madeira interfluve, especially the municipalities of Manicoré and Humaitá, directly affected by the BR-319 and BR-230 highways, Amazonas, Brazil. The region suffers from growing illegal deforestation and rights violations which are accentuated by the effects of the climate crisis, especially the impacts of extreme drought. The scenario is even more serious for women and young people, who are on the front line of protecting their territories. Invisibilized, they become easy targets and vulnerable to the pressures of climate change.
In this context, the Transdisciplinary Network of the Amazon (RETA) was created in 2010 as a space for constructing a real base for plural dialogue. RETA brings together organizations to strengthen good living and governance in the "real field"—referring to the empirical context or the concrete social environment where observations and actions are conducted, as opposed to theoretical constructs. RETA offers an alternative development model in the Purus-Madeira interfluve, located in the central region of the Amazon. By embarking on this journey, the Network aims to address inequalities while highlighting the forms of governance and knowledge existing in these territories. RETA is composed of individuals, collectives, community-based organizations, public authorities, and educational and research institutions.
This space for articulation and dialogue represents a collective process responding to the dismantling and fragmentation of land management systems over the last few years, and the consequent lack of support for biodiversity conservation and the protection of the region's traditional populations’ ways of life.
